Dubtitles Privacy Policy
Dubtitles is a browser extension that translates Netflix subtitles and manages licensing. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your choices.
Data We Collect
- License data: License key, plan type, expiration, and backend verification timestamps used to confirm access.
- Device identifier: A pseudonymous device ID generated locally to reduce fraud and enforce license limits.
- Usage metrics: Monthly minutes used and session timestamps to enforce the free-tier quota.
- Diagnostics: Minimal error messages related to license verification; console debug logging is disabled in production builds.
- Payment: Payments are processed by Stripe on our server-side checkout. Card data is handled by Stripe, not the extension.
How We Use Data
- Validate licenses and enforce plan limits.
- Detect abuse (e.g., tampering or time manipulation) and protect the service.
- Provide usage info in the popup UI (free minutes remaining, next reset date).
Where Data Is Stored
- Locally (extension): License state, usage counters, and device ID are stored in browser localStorage and mirrored to chrome.storage.local for UI rendering.
- Server: License verification sends license key, device ID, timestamp, build ID, and optional signed assertion to the Dubtitles license API (LICENSE_API_URL).
- Third parties: Subtitle text that requires translation is sent to Google Translate (translate.googleapis.com) to provide translations.
What We Do Not Collect
- No browsing history or information about which titles you watch.
- No selling or sharing of data with data brokers or advertisers.
Permissions Explained
- tabs / activeTab / scripting: Inject translation scripts only on Netflix watch pages to render translated subtitles.
- storage: Store license and usage data locally.
- Host permissions: https://www.netflix.com/* (inject translation scripts) and https://translate.googleapis.com/* (perform translations).
Retention
License and usage data are kept while your license is active; usage counters reset monthly. Server-side license records are retained as needed for billing, fraud prevention, and compliance.
Your Choices
- Revoke the local license from the extension UI or remove the extension to delete local data.
- To request deletion of server-side license data (where applicable), contact us using the channel below.
